The labiaplasty procedure (labia reduction) has become much more common recently. This procedure is for women who have problems with large or asymmetric labia. During the procedure, the labia are reduced to achieve a more balanced appearance. Beyond aesthetics, large or uneven labia can also cause functional concerns. Patients often complain that large labia get caught in jeans, stick out of panties or swimsuits, or cause discomfort or pain during intercourse.
Newer techniques allow the procedure to be done with minimal scarring, a short recovery time, and predictable results. The sutures placed during surgery dissolve on their own and do not need to be removed after the procedure. Most patients experience minimal pain and discomfort during healing. Depending on your goals, labiaplasty may be combined with a vaginal tightening procedure or other types of procedures, such as breast augmentation.
