THE SCIENCE

How HBOT Works...and Why It Works So Well

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves breathing highly concentrated oxygen inside a carefully pressurized chamber. Under increased atmospheric pressure, oxygen dissolves more efficiently into the bloodstream and plasma to reach tissues that may not receive optimal oxygen under normal conditions.

Enhanced oxygen delivery supports the body at a cellular level by:

Who Benefits Most from HBOT?

HBOT works well for a broad range of patients, from those recovering from cosmetic or reconstructive surgery to individuals proactively investing in their long-term health. You may be a strong candidate if you:

  • Are healing after a procedure and want to speed up recovery and reduce downtime
  • Are interested in supporting skin quality, collagen, and visible signs of aging
  • Deal with ongoing fatigue, inflammation, or sluggish recovery after workouts or illness
  • Are looking for a non-invasive, evidence-based complement to your aesthetic or wellness routine
  • Have a wound or tissue issue that isn’t healing at the pace you’d expect
  • Want to support brain clarity, circulation, and physical resilience over time

Every candidate is evaluated individually. A consultation with our team allows us to review your health history and determine whether HBOT is the right fit and how to sequence it with any other treatments you may be doing.

What a Session Actually Looks Like

01 — Consultation

We start with a conversation. Your goals, your health history, and your timeline- we take all of it into account before recommending a protocol. HBOT pricing and session frequency are personalized, not one-size-fits-all.

02 — Your Session

You’ll settle into the chamber, breathe comfortably, and let the oxygen do its work. Pressure builds gradually, and most patients barely notice the transition. Sixty minutes later, many describe feeling clear-headed and refreshed.

03 — No Downtime

Walk in, walk out. There’s no recovery period, no restrictions. Some patients notice benefits after a single session. The deeper results for improved skin vitality, faster surgical healing, and sustained energy all typically compound over a series of treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Your Questions, Answered

Most sessions run about 60 minutes from the time you enter the chamber to the time pressure normalizes. Add a few minutes on either side for setup, and you’re typically in and out in under 90 minutes, so it’s easy to fit into a workday.

Some patients notice improvements in energy and soreness after their very first session. For meaningful results in surgical recovery, skin quality, or anti-aging, most protocols involve a series of sessions, typically 10 to 20, depending on your goals. We’ll give you a clear recommendation at your consultation.

Most people find it surprisingly comfortable. As the pressure increases, you may feel a slight fullness in your ears that’s similar to descending in an airplane, which clears easily with a jaw movement or swallow. Once you’re at full pressure, you can watch TV, work on your laptop, or simply relax.

Yes, and it’s one of the most common ways our patients use it. Pre-procedure sessions can prime tissue for better healing. Post-procedure sessions help reduce swelling, accelerate repair, and can noticeably shorten downtime. We’ll coordinate timing with your treatment plan.

HBOT isn’t for everyone. We screen all patients before treatment. Conditions that may disqualify or delay treatment include: a history of collapsed lung or certain pulmonary conditions, active respiratory infections, uncontrolled diabetes, severe claustrophobia, current pregnancy, or recent ear, cataract, or dental surgery. Your safety comes first as our team reviews everything before your first session.

HBOT has a strong safety profile when properly administered. The most common side effect is mild ear or sinus pressure, which resolves quickly. Rare risks include oxygen toxicity or barotrauma, both of which are why having a medically trained team overseeing your treatment matters. We don’t cut corners on that.

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is ideal. You don’t need to bring anything special, as the chamber has everything you need for a comfortable hour, including climate control and entertainment.

Absolutely. Many of our older patients use HBOT specifically for its anti-aging and circulatory benefits. Age itself isn’t a disqualifier; your overall health status is. We evaluate each patient individually to make sure it’s a good fit.

No. HBOT at Blackhawk is a self-pay wellness service. We don’t accept insurance or provide documentation for reimbursement claims. If insurance coverage is essential to you, we’re happy to point you toward hospital-based programs where that may be available, but our focus is on delivering the highest-quality experience for patients who are investing directly in their outcomes.
