Lip augmentation is a versatile aesthetic procedure that enhances the shape, structure, and volume of the lips.
At Blackhawk Plastic Surgery, we provide patients with two primary paths to rejuvenation: temporary dermal fillers and long-lasting fat transfer. Both options aim to restore a youthful balance to the face and improve the appearance of fine wrinkles around the mouth.
Restylane Silk is a clear hyaluronic acid gel used to temporarily add volume, resulting in a fresher, more youthful appearance. Restylane Silk’s formulation is made of smaller, smoother particles than those used in other Restylane products. This, along with an ultrafine needle designed for greater accuracy, helps deliver softer, more precise results.
Lip augmentation via fat transfer is a quick procedure that enhances the lips and restores a woman’s facial balance. A lip augmentation can also minimize the amount of wrinkles around the mouth. Fat transfer uses the body’s own tissue, offering a supple and natural look to lips that lasts at least a year, or even permanently. With age, lips lose plumpness and become noticeably longer and thinner, creating a sense of distance from the nose and elongating the face.

Lip augmentation can be performed in two ways: either with filler injections or with a fat transfer to the lips.
The fat transfer process involves removing fat from another part of the body, usually the abdomen or thigh, and injecting it directly into the lips using needle sticks. Lip augmentation is usually performed in combination with another procedure, such as liposuction or facial fat transfer. For lip augmentation, local anesthesia is administered. Recovery time can be a week or two.
Beginning at the corner of the bottom lip, Dr. Ronan inserts a needle and moves it across the lip, increasing the amount of filler/fat it releases as he moves to the center of the mouth. He then repeats on the other side to create a shape that mimics a naturally full lip. As an outpatient procedure, recovery time is only minutes to a few hours before returning to normal activities.

For lip fillers, downtime is virtually non-existent; you may experience minor swelling or bruising at the injection site for a few days, but most patients return to work immediately. For fat transfer, recovery can take a week or two as the donor site heals and the lips settle into their new shape. We provide ice packs and specific aftercare instructions to ensure you remain comfortable throughout the process.

Depending on the type of filler used, most patients experience long-lasting results from 6 months up to 18 months. After the initial swelling period of around two weeks, your beautiful shape will reveal itself.
Lip filler treatment is charged per syringe. The cost varies depending on what type of product is used, but you can expect to pay between $425 and $750. Half syringes are available for those requiring minor touch-ups, whereas full syringes are typically used to provide adequate correction or enhancement.
Most dermal fillers used in treating lips are hyaluronic-based products. Because our bodies naturally produce hyaluronic acid, there is very little chance of the body reacting negatively to the filler itself. The injection, however, can cause temporary bruising, swelling, and slight bleeding at the injection site.
While pain tolerance does factor into the level of discomfort felt, most patients report very minimal pain with lip injections. Most lip filler products are mixed with lidocaine to further enhance the comfortability. It may be worthwhile to ask your injector if a topical lidocaine can be applied prior to injecting; if you are nervous, ice packs held over the treatment area can make a significant difference as well.
Swelling, itchiness, redness, and bruising are more common than pain after lip filler is injected. Some patients report mild discomfort in the form of tenderness (like when pressing the lips together) for a short period of time after injection. Ice packs can help with all of these potential concerns should they occur.
Most hyaluronic lip fillers can last 6 months to a year (or longer in some cases). Depending on your desired outcome, touch-up appointments may be required during this time frame for maintenance. Otherwise, every 6-12 months is the usual and customary time frame for most patients to receive lip injections.
Depending on your desired outcome, half a syringe or a full syringe may be suggested for your initial lip filler injection appointment. From there, patients can return for additional filler should they want a more enhanced look. Some patients may require two syringes during their initial treatment, only to return months later for a touch-up using a smaller amount of product.
Bruising, swelling, and discomfort can occur at injection sites following lip filler injections. Although these are temporary, it is worth noting that the levels of each are dependent on each patient, the type of filler used, and how much product is administered.
No, lips will return to their natural state once the injected filler has dissipated over time. Stretching and sagging should not be a concern when seeking to receive lip augmentation.
Lip filler will remain soft and natural after the initial swelling dissipates. The injection sites can feel hard and lumpy at first, as this is the body's natural response system.
Most lip filler syringes are delivered in 1 ml syringes. Most offices carry half syringes, or 0.5 ml syringes, for minor touch-ups and those requiring a very small amount of product.
Most lip filler injections are made of hyaluronic acid, which is a substance produced naturally by the body. Over time, the body will slowly absorb the product and return the lips to their natural shape.
Lip filler metabolizes at different time intervals for each person. Manufacturers recommend reinjecting after 6 to 9 months to keep the fuller shape and volume delivered. However, some patients see benefits up to 12 months post-initial injection.
The results from lip filler can last up to 12 months, but the usual and customary time period that patients return for reinjection is between 6 and 9 months. This helps to preserve the enhancement and keep your lips looking youthful.
